Minuend and Subtrahend Difference

Learn with Pari

Have you ever had a question during math class but felt a little shy to ask? Don’t worry! In our new blog series “Teacher Teacher”, we’ll make learning fun and simple – just like you’re in class with your favorite teacher.

Today, we’re starting with Part-1, and we’re meeting someone very special…

👩‍🏫 Meet Ms. Numbera – The Math Teacher!

She wears glasses shaped like the number 8 and loves explaining things with stories and fun tricks. Today, Ms. Numbera is helping her students understand something many kids find confusing:

❓ What is the difference between Minuend and Subtrahend?

Let’s step into the classroom and find out!

📚 Ms. Numbera says:

“Class, today we’re going to learn two very important math words: Minuend and Subtrahend. They live inside subtraction problems!”

Here’s an example on the board:

    9 - 4 = 5

✨ In this subtraction:

  • 9 is the Minuend
  • 4 is the Subtrahend
  • 5 is the Difference

🧠 But what do those words mean?

🔹 Minuend:

This is the big number – the number you start with in a subtraction problem.
💬 Ms. Numbera: “Think of it as the full basket of apples before you give any away.”

🔹 Subtrahend:

This is the number you are taking away from the minuend.
💬 Ms. Numbera: “Like the number of apples you give to your friend.”

🔹 Difference:

This is the answer – what’s left after you subtract.
💬 Ms. Numbera: “These are the apples still in your basket.”

🍎 Story Time with Pari!

Pari has 12 balloons. She gives 5 balloons to her brother.

Question: How many balloons does Pari have now?

Let’s solve it!

   12 - 5 = 7
  • Minuend = 12 (total balloons)
  • Subtrahend = 5 (balloons given away)
  • Difference = 7 (balloons left)

🎉 Pari says: “Now I know! The Minuend is the number I start with, and the Subtrahend is what I take away!”

🎨 Fun Tip to Remember

Here’s a rhyme from Ms. Numbera:

Minuend is what you begin with,
Subtrahend is what you subtract,
Do the math and find the truth —
The Difference comes right after that!”
